I don’t really watch Mad Men, but I do tend to passively absorb the show when Jenny has it on and I’m in the room checking email on my laptop. I had not idea that through those very few obtuse viewing sessions, the culture of the show has rubbed off on me a bit. When I saw one day that Jenny had Mad Men’d herself and was using it as her desktop background, I thought “cool!”… then I thought “wait, why do I think that’s cool?”… it was then that I realized I had been subconsciously hooked on early sixties slick! But, I figured why not give it a go myself.
After picking every attribute from hair and eyebrows down to suit and accessories, I settled on what I call “the smug pantless version of me”. Even though it looks like those are white tennis shorts, you start off defining your Mad Med self in nothing but underwear… which is what I still insist those are. When you choose a shirt or suit, you get pants… unless you pick the preppy sweater. Then the underwear stay… which I thought was a hilarious bug until Jenny pointed out the pockets. I still insist on thinking that I’m standing there at work with my 5 o’clock shadow, my coffee and newspaper, and a smug look on my face… with no pants on. It’s a lot funnier if you picture it that way.
