Wired had an excellent article on deCODE Genetics, which has filed for bankruptcy and will likely be bought up by another company. The concern is that the purchasing company, driven not by passion for the industry but by profits alone, will opt to sell customer data. It reminded me of the old biometric iris scanner […]

Over at Gizmodo they are talking about a new concept device that blew my socks off. The idea would be to implant a bluetooth touch-sensitive display into your arm, and power it using the readily available oxygen and glucose supplies whizzing through your bloodstream. Pretty crazy huh?

I was hanging out in a local alehouse after work last week when I got into a conversation with the waitress about being vegetarian. The top two most common questions I get about it are; 1) how long have you been vegetarian, and 2) what do you eat? Answering the first one was easy… I’ve […]

The CDC has built a nearly real-time H1N1 tracking system called FluView. But how do they get this data? They get it directly from doctors, clinics, and hospitals of course! The CDC said it is now tracking data on 14 million patients from physician practices and hospitals that is stored on a relational database hosted […]

From BoingBoing: Researchers have identified the pathway in the brain that causes cognitive impairment when we haven’t gotten enough sleep. In a new study, Penn State biologists and neuroscientists found that when mice were deprived of sleep, a particular enzyme built up in the brain’s hippocampus. The concept of reading a person like a barcode is not a new one, it has come up constantly for me every time I deal with people calling me “Satan’s Mouthpiece” (yes, I got emails calling me that). I just found this Elective Home Surgery FAQ published by BMEZine. While I don’t suggest anyone do any kind of home surgery, this info might be useful for those that choose to. I’m re-posting it here to help protect the information in case BMEZine ever bites it. Please check the BMEZine site for the most […]

Ok, I’ve got what some consider to be a body mod. I’ve got two RFID implants. In fact, my very first interview about my first implant was with BMEZine. But for me, this “mod” is purely functional. They don’t actually show (unless I want them to). Now these bagelheads over in Japan though, they take […]

UPDATE The further adventures of uric acid and gout foot So here’s an odd one. Over the last few years I started having problems with gout in my right foot. It’s odd because every time I go to the doctor for it they tell me to lay off the booze and eat less meat. The […]

El saga del tooth continues. I had a check up today where I informed the man in charge that I tweaked my implant with an Allen wrench. He was not happy to hear that, but said the x-ray looked alright. Even at this point, with multiple root canalled teeth and one implant, I still wasn’t […]
