A couple days ago, I started my new job as Director of IT at Outback Power Systems, Inc. (www.outbackpower.com). I have to say it’s the first time I’ve stepped directly into a management roll, aside from starting my own company I suppose 😉 Outback is just the kind of company I wanted to be involved with… the people are great and the atmosphere is very hard working but laid back at the same time (everyone has a focus on what’s important, not on BS corporate politic and personal facade). Most of all, they know how to spend money in all the right places, and not in the wrong ones. That’s so important when it comes to IT, because you’re often dealing with these little boxes that can sometimes cost as much as your favorite luxury car… it’s sometimes hard to mentally quantify (and qualify) the value of something so very small.
I’m on day 3, and so far I’ve not had time to take a breath. Things are moving so fast over here, I’m trying to soak up as much history as I can while jumping in the hot seat on projects already in motion. It sometimes feels like those action movies where you see a pair of would-be heros switching drivers while flying down the road at top speed. The best part about all of this is the fact that I really like what the company actually does… I’m very interested in hearing about the technology they are producing, talking to the people on the assembly floor, chatting with the R&D folks… it’s all very exciting!
