Hello World

Well hello world!

Yesterday I took some time off from coding the next txtGroups messaging platform to construct this blog server. Every once in a while, even though I’m busy beyond belief, I get the urge to just core dump to a blog entry of some sort… but I never wanted to setup a blog on another service. Just the thought of all that valuable data sitting on someone else’s servers… its like being a passenger in a car. You feel safe enough, but every time the driver comes up to a stop sign you feel yourself pressing your foot into the floorboard, as if there was a magical break pedal there. And, I suppose its not like my blog entries are “precious cargo”, but if I were to quantify the value of my time in dollars, then the act of creating a blog entry begins to take on real value.

Anyway, over the years I’ve kept kind of a personal blog of sorts through various types of digital methods, including static HTML pages, notepad entries, etc. So, even though this is my first official post on my very own blog, when I get the time I’ll be back-filling the last few years worth of journal entries and notepad files, consolidating them into this fancy blog medium.

Ok, let me get started…

Today we’re headed out (Jennifer and I)… we both need a break from the constant sense of cabin fever. We’re gonna check out either Brunswick to the south, or head up to Beaufort in South Carolina. But, before we can do that, I had to call roadside assistance to give me a jump start. The RFID reader in my car is a constant drain on my battery, and when I lived in Vancouver BC it wasn’t an issue because I drove my car just about every day. Now, sitting in Savannah GA, we don’t drive for days at a time… for fun we’ll walk around the historic district, and walk to the store when we need groceries. In fact, I discovered that my battery was dead 3 days ago when I wanted to get something out of my car and the remote didn’t unlock the door. I unlocked the door by actually inserting the key and turning (how archaic). But, that was 3 days ago and still I’ve not had reason to drive… until today.

I got the roadside assistance card when renewing my insurance, before leaving for Savannah. It was like $30 or whatever, and I figured it was a good investment for a long road trip. I hadn’t needed to pull it out, until now. Basically all my gear is still in Washington State, including my battery charger. But, it’s a free service, so why not wrench my $30 out of it. While we sit around waiting for them to show up, it got me thinking about breakdowns I had when I was a teen. Back in the early 90s, cell phones were around but they weren’t ubiquitous like they are today. Back then, my main concern was getting to a phone. Now it seems my biggest concern is finding someone to call.

Speak of the devil, the guy is here already.

I love you babe, and I’m glad you have a blog on your own server. Journals really are “precious cargo” – there are few things more important to remember than your own life experiences and thoughts… even if it’s about waiting for a mechanic to jump start your car!
