Well, it’s been about a month shy of 6 years since I first implanted my left hand with a 3x13mm glass encased EM4102 RFID tag. So far so good, and even though the media hype around it quickly died down, there is a steady stream on inquiry from other adventure hobbyists on the RFID Toys forum.
For the last couple years I’ve been thinking about how DIY implantation has really taken off, so much so that I have no idea how many DIY RFID implantees there are. While VeriChip (now PositiveID corp) keeps close track of their implanted flock, the very nature of DIY means there is no umbrella corporation keeping tabs on who was implanted with what. It’s all organic, which is why I wanted to come up with a name for the DIY RFID implantee crowd. The best thing I could come up with in the 5 minutes I spent thinking about it was RFIDIYs, pronounced “arfiddies”. RFIDIYs are different from VeriChip implantees because they are not simply consumers of a corporate implantation ID product, they have taken initiative to explore the technology on their own by doing their own research, picking out their own size, frequency, and data protocol of the tag they want, getting it implanted, and finally building their own solutions.
I think now that the number of RFIDIYs has grown beyond my ability to count and keep track of them, not to mention the fact that people are implanting themselves and building projects entirely on their own with no interaction with the forum, it may be time to try to put together come kind of RFIDIY convention or summit. Hmm, “summit” seems too grandiose… and so does “convention”. How about we just start with a Facebook group?
