Brown sugar is people! You’re eating people!

IMG00515-20090921-0812Ok, so the title is a (bad) play on Soylent Green. So what?

Today I learned something interesting. If you need to do any RFID testing or research on liquid interference typical of meat or people, brown sugar is a great analogue. An unopened bag has interference properties very similar to that of humans, or cuts of beef. This fact become very useful when testing typical UHF backscatter tags, especially things like name tags that rest against the body or labels on cuts of beef. A bag of brown sugar puts up less fuss when asked to stand around all day, and it doesn’t go rotten on you either!
